Poetry Related Things

Thought I would post some of my recent poetry stuff. I’ve only got a few minutes to do this before work, so this is all off the top of my head. Okay, I did a  reading at Emory with my Bloof friends in the fall and here’s a link to that recording (scroll down to where it says Sandra Simonds)

I have a poem in the new issue of Fence and I was on Poets.org’s poem-a-day. I also have fourteen sonnets in the new issue of Court Green. The issue just came in the mail and it’s super pretty and fancy looking. I’m also going to have one poem in the April issue of POETRY. This is a poem about taking Ezekiel to France during spring break last year. I’m so glad that they decided to publish this poem because it’s a poem so near and dear to my heart. Maybe I’ll write a little bit more about it when I have time. But when I think of that poem, I feel like I took an X-ray of a moment. I don’t know how else to describe it. I’ll also have an interview up at Devil’s Lake pretty soon and I’ll link it when it goes up. I have some sonnets up at Housefire, Juked and Barrelhouse and the Awl and in the current issue of the wonderful Barn Owl Review.

In my non-sonnet related poetry news, I have a poem coming out in the Denver Quarterly and Columbia Poetry Journal and a very long and very strange poem coming out in the next Lana Turner.

Here’s the video of the talk I did with Rod Smith and Steve Zultanski about the White House Poetry Jam. I was so nervous that I probably would have fainted if it wasn’t for the moral support of Nada, Shanna and Jen in the audience. (Though I’m pretty sure I put Jen to sleep after about 5 minutes!) Sorry, Jen. It looks like this talk will be published on the Lana Turner blog at some point in the near future.

This semester, I’m teaching a creative writing workshop and I have some extremely talented students. I’m also still overseeing our literary journal, the Night Hawk Review. The school’s creative writing has been really impressive and this year, we’ve been having to send out more rejections than last year which has been an interesting experience. That said, getting into the journal has become a real achievement and something to strive for. I feel really proud of our work on both the journal and the club. We’ve also hosted a number of readings inviting poets Nick Demske, Patricia Lockwood, Susana Gardner, Shanna Compton, Peter Davis, Anne Boyer and others to our little corner of the galaxy.

A very pregnant me will be attending AWP this year to take part in three readings–one on Thursday, one on Friday and one on Saturday. Info on that at Bloof Books. I’m excited to see my poet friends in Chicago.
